A photoshoot at the Pyramids is the single most requested experience we deliver — and the one most travellers get wrong. The best photos at Giza are not taken at noon from the tourist viewpoint. They are taken at specific hours, from specific angles, with specific outfits, by a photographer who knows the plateau. This guide is everything we have learned from more than 4,000 shoots since 2015.

Best hours — and why they matter more than anything

  • Sunrise (gate opening, 8am): the best light of the day. Cool, soft, empty. The Pyramids catch the first light from the east — this is when the Sphinx profile and the Panorama look extraordinary.
  • Golden hour (last 60–90 minutes before sunset): warm, amber, cinematic. The other great window. Best for silhouette shots and dramatic portraits.
  • Late afternoon (2 hours before sunset): decent light, more tourists, but good for the "classic postcard" Panorama shot.
  • Avoid 10am–2pm: hard overhead sun, heat haze, harsh shadows on the face, maximum crowds.

The six best angles

  • Panorama: the paved viewpoint south of the plateau where all three pyramids line up. Tourists know it — so get there 90 minutes before sunset and stay.
  • Sphinx terrace: lower angle, warmer stone, the Sphinx in profile against the second pyramid.
  • Desert track behind the third pyramid: from the south edge, all three pyramids stack diagonally. Ten minutes by car, almost no tourists.
  • The Valley Temple: descend to the granite blocks, look up — the Sphinx fills the frame from below.
  • Golf course foreground (by arrangement): green fairways in front, pyramids behind, the sky turning coral. Our private shoots can access this for engagements and honeymoons.
  • Rooftop on Sphinx Street: the postcard from above — rooftops, Sphinx, Pyramids beyond. Reserved in advance.

What to wear

Solid, flowing colours — white, red, emerald, navy, gold — photograph beautifully against limestone and sand. Avoid busy prints that disappear in the frame. For couples and honeymooners: a flowing white or ivory dress plus a second outfit in a bolder colour works brilliantly — our honeymoon tour includes pre-trip outfit guidance. Long skirts and scarves catch wind in motion; ask for a "walk toward the pyramid" pose rather than a static smile. What to expect on the day

Our photoshoots run 3–5 hours. Private pickup at your hotel in air-conditioned transport. Your photographer and Egyptologist guide meet you at the plateau entrance. We handle tickets, permits and any access arrangements. During the shoot you move between viewpoints in the vehicle, with the photographer shooting continuously and the guide teaching you what you are standing in front of. We deliver 150–300 fully retouched high-resolution images within 48 hours via a private online gallery.

Camera and phone tips (if you're shooting yourself)

  • Expose for the sky and lift shadows in post; metering on the pyramids alone will blow the sky out.
  • Use a 24–70mm lens for portraits and a 70–200mm to compress pyramids behind subjects.
  • Silhouettes at the last 10 minutes: expose for the sky, let the pyramids go dark. This is the shot that stops the scroll.
  • Bring a lens cloth — the plateau is dusty. Avoid changing lenses outside if you can help it.
  • For phones: use portrait mode on the Sphinx terrace, and HDR off during golden hour (it flattens warm light).

Permits and rules

Personal photoshoots with a phone or handheld camera need only the standard plateau ticket. Professional tripods or lighting setups require special permission from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism — our team handles all permits for our private shoots and our luxury photography tours.
