The honest answer is yes — Egypt is one of the safest tourist destinations in the world for the kind of travel our guests do. It is not risk-free (no country is), and the UK Foreign Office, US State Department and Australian DFAT all maintain advisories. But the practical experience on the ground is very different from the headlines. This guide answers the question properly.

What the data actually shows

Egypt receives over 14 million tourists a year — a figure growing back to pre-2020 levels. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Petty theft exists in crowded areas (Khan el-Khalili, central Cairo) but is a fraction of what you would experience in Paris or Barcelona. The main safety concerns that affect tourists are: road traffic (Egypt's roads are dangerous), heat and dehydration in summer, and stomach illness from tap water. These are logistical, not personal safety, issues — and each is easily mitigated.

Safety by area

  • Cairo & Giza: extremely safe for tourists. Tourist police present at every major site. We have guided thousands of guests through the city without incident since 2015.
  • Luxor & Aswan: as safe as Cairo. The West Bank of Luxor, where many tombs are located, is quiet and welcoming.
  • Alexandria: safe, cosmopolitan, and under-visited. Very warm to foreign guests.
  • Red Sea resorts (Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam): some of the safest tourist zones in the country, designed entirely around international visitors.
  • Siwa Oasis & Western Desert: safe but remote. Travel with a licensed guide; do not self-drive.
  • Sinai interior: avoid the northern Sinai region north of the St. Catherine Monastery. Sharm el-Sheikh and the Red Sea coast are fine.

For women travellers

Egypt is generally safe for women, with the normal extra precautions that apply in any Mediterranean or Middle Eastern country. Catcalling happens, especially in the older districts of Cairo; it is unpleasant but rarely escalates. Our recommendations: dress modestly in non-tourist areas, avoid eye contact and verbal engagement with strangers who approach you, and travel with a licensed guide if you are solo. For families with children

Egypt is a family destination — Egyptian culture adores children. Our family tours are designed around the heat, with early starts, midday breaks and vehicle-based touring. The main safety considerations are sun exposure, dehydration, and watching children on the plateau (the rocky terrain near the pyramids is uneven). Practical safety tips

  • Transport: use pre-booked private cars or Uber/Careem, not random street taxis after dark. See our tour options for private transport.
  • Cash: carry 200–500 EGP in small notes for tips and small purchases; do not carry more than you need.
  • Water: drink only bottled water. Brush your teeth with bottled water for the first few days. Avoid ice in street drinks.
  • Sun: hat, sunscreen, electrolytes. Dehydration is the most common travel problem in Egypt, not crime.
  • Valuables: hotel safes are reliable. Do not carry passports and large cash unless required.
