The Short Answer
The best months to visit Egypt are October, November, and March. These months offer mild temperatures (22–28°C / 72–82°F), clear skies, and comfortable conditions for every type of activity — from a full-day tour of the Pyramids to a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan.
If you're a photographer focused on the Pyramids specifically, October and November give the warmest, clearest light of the year, with sunrise sessions that produce remarkable color in the limestone.
Why Season Matters in Egypt
Unlike European travel, where weather is the primary seasonal concern, Egypt's travel season shapes your trip in four distinct ways:
- Heat: In July and August, Luxor and Aswan regularly hit 40°C+ (104°F+), making outdoor photography genuinely dangerous without careful planning.
- Crowds: Christmas and Easter bring enormous visitor numbers to the Giza Plateau and Valley of the Kings. Weekday vs. weekend also matters — Fridays and Saturdays are Egyptian weekends.
- Price: Peak season (December–February) can be 40–60% more expensive than the low season (June–September).
- Light: Winter months give lower sun angles, which create more dramatic shadows on the Pyramids. Summer sun is overhead and gives flat, harsh light.

October & November — The Best Months
If you can only visit Egypt once, come in October or November. Daytime temperatures settle between 22–30°C (72–86°F), evenings are pleasant, and the sky is reliably clear. The sun sits lower on the horizon — perfect for sunrise and sunset photography at the Pyramids.
Crowds are moderate at the start of October and ramp up toward the end of November. Book your photography tour 3–4 weeks in advance to secure sunrise slots.
December, January, February — Peak Season
These are the most popular months for a reason: crisp, cool days and clear skies. Expect temperatures between 14–24°C (57–75°F). Evenings in Cairo can dip to 10°C (50°F) — bring a light jacket for dinners and evening photoshoots.
The downsides are crowds and price. Christmas through early January and Egyptian school holidays (mid-January) see the biggest spikes. Book hotels, cruises, and photography sessions 2–3 months in advance.
March & April — The Shoulder Season
March is nearly as good as October — warm days, cool evenings, excellent light. April brings rising temperatures (30°C+) and the possibility of the Khamsin, a hot desert wind that carries sand and dust. Photographers should build flexibility into their itinerary during April.
May & September — Transition Months
May and September are the transitional months — hot but not unbearable, and notably cheaper than peak season. If you're heat-tolerant, these months offer excellent value. Sunrise sessions (5:30–7:30 AM) are almost mandatory for outdoor photography.
June, July, August — The Hot Season
Summer in Egypt is genuinely intense. Cairo sees 35°C (95°F); Luxor and Aswan reach 40–42°C (104–108°F). We generally advise against desert photography during midday — heat stroke is a real risk.
That said, summer offers the lowest prices of the year (often 40–60% cheaper), emptier sites, and extraordinary pre-dawn light. If you're flexible on schedule and can handle heat, summer photography can be magical — as long as every shoot is scheduled at sunrise or after 5 PM.
Photography-Specific Timing
Photographers should think in terms of light windows, not months. Across Egypt, the best photography happens in two periods each day:
- Sunrise to 90 minutes after: The softest, most dramatic light at the Pyramids and temples. Sites are nearly empty. Ideal for editorial portraits.
- 90 minutes before sunset: Warm, golden light. Excellent for silhouettes and wide landscape shots. Crowds are heaviest here.
Midday (11 AM – 3 PM) light is harsh and flat. This is the ideal window for museum visits, meals, and rest.
Nile Cruise Season
Nile cruises between Luxor and Aswan run year-round but are best from October through April. The weather is comfortable on the sundeck, and sunset cruises produce exceptional photography conditions.
During Ramadan (dates shift yearly — approximately February 18 – March 19 in 2026), Nile cruise schedules may shift, and some restaurants close during daylight. The experience is different but often more culturally immersive, with exceptional evening meals (Iftar) and lantern-lit streets perfect for photography.
Ramadan & Islamic Holidays
Ramadan is a beautiful time to be in Egypt, though not for the standard tourist experience. Restaurants close during daylight; historical sites may have shorter hours; and the rhythm of the cities shifts to evenings.
